Common Mistakes to Avoid When Buying a New Garage Door

When you are in need of a new garage door, it is important that you not rush the decision. This often results in making some mistakes that tend to be common among homeowners who are new to purchasing one. Here are some mistakes to make sure you avoid when shopping around for a new garage door.

Failing to Consider the Garage Door Material

This is a common mistake made by people who only look at the appearance of a door, but fail to consider the material. The material of your garage door makes a big difference because it tells you how long it will last and what types of climate or weather conditions it can handle. If you live somewhere that gets extra windy, cold, hot, or humid, there are certain materials that work better for you. For example, if you live somewhere that gets frequent brush fires, choosing a garage door made of wood is not a good idea. Go for aluminum or steel instead. If you live in a mild climate that doesn't get a lot of rain or extreme weather conditions, wood will be just fine for you. Fiberglass is another option that you might want to consider.

Not Looking For Advanced Features

Also don't make the mistake of ignoring some of the extra features some garage doors come with. This is a mistake often made by people simply looking at the price and basic style of the door, without considering the reasons some of the other garage doors might be a little more expensive. There are some features that do make it worth the extra cost. For example, if you live somewhere that gets extremely cold weather, such as below freezing temperatures, then you might want to consider a door with extra insulation or weather seals. This helps to reduce your energy bills since not as much cold, bitter air is getting into your home through the garage. There are also doors with sensors that can recognize with an object, child, or pet is in the way, and will not close all the way. This is very important for safety and worth spending more on.

Forgetting About Security Concerns

Another mistake you should avoid is not thinking about the security of the garage door you choose. First of all, decide whether or not windows are a good option. Windows look great and add a homey feel to a garage door, but they might be a security risk if they are low and large enough for someone to break and gain entrance into your garage. Also look into possibly getting an electronic entry system for the garage door as opposed to a remote or traditional lock.

Hinged, Sliding, Antique, Modern, Wood, Glass and Other Doors

Doors come in such an exciting range of styles and materials. If you need to save space inside, you can use a sliding or pocket door instead of a swinging hinged door. If you want to allow light through the door, you can opt for glass, or you can stick with wood. Whether you like contemporary styles or traditional looks, you can easily mirror that preference with the right door. Hi! My name is Anna, and I have always been intrigued by doors. As a photographer, an amateur home designer and a DIY lover, I tend to see details about doors that others often overlook. This blog is dedicated to door details, and whether you need help choosing a door, repairing one or replacing one, this blog is a great place to start your research. Thank you for reading.
